This school concert attendance policy was developed to add some accountability to students who choose to participate in a performing arts ensemble. Copy, paste, and edit as needed. Hope it helps.

Concert/Performance Attendance Policy

It is the policy of the ______Music Dept. that concerts, performances, and competitions are an integral part of the learning process in music education.  It is expected that students who choose to participate in a performing group accept the responsibilities that go with it.  There will be evening performances during the school year. When a student enrolls in band, chorus, guard, percussion, or orchestra – these events are part of the course.  Students are also expected to stay for the entire concert, and adhere to the concert dress and behavioral policies.

It is understood that legitimate conflicts may arise, but we ask all participating students and parents to check the performance dates listed on the back and make every effort to attend these events.  Avoid making other plans on these dates if at all possible. Outside-of-school activities such as youth sports leagues, clubs, lessons, etc. should not take precedence over a school subject the student has chosen.  If transportation is a problem, understand that many children in your childs grade are also attending. Try to plan ahead with a neighbor or classmate for alternative ways to get to or home from the concerts.

There are set guidelines for students who may have a genuine conflict.  Your child’s music teacher should receive a note explaining the conflict at least one week prior to the performance, or earlier if known in advance.  That student will be excused. A student who is absent on the day of the concert MAY NOT attend the concert that evening – that is a school policy. They will also be excused.  If there is an emergency on the day of the concert, an email should be sent to the music teacher before the concert.

__________ Music Dept. believes that music ensembles are the ultimate team sport.  Every member is essential to a quality performance – there is no bench and only one game.  If the bass drummer missed a concert without prior warning, the entire performance would suffer.  That’s not fair. If it’s known weeks ahead someone else could learn and rehearse the part.  We feel there must be some accountability for students who take on the responsibility of the performing arts.

Band Director, Choral Director – with contact info if not in the header.
