Director, ________ Marching Band
———————————-pg (general info for newbies)
What is Marching Band?
Marching band contains elements of different youth activities all rolled into one. It is a performance ensemble involving music, athletics, choreography and public performance. It is a complex union of physical demand and artistic expression. At _________ High School, Marching Band is also one of the largest and most diverse student organizations in the school. The _____ Band serves as musical ambassadors for the school and the community with local performances and by traveling to and competing in statewide competitions. Marching Band and Color Guard are open to all students. Musical or guard experience are encouraged but not mandatory. It is an after school activity on par with a Varsity sport in scope and commitment.
The program that is performed each fall season is custom designed for our band. The musical arrangements, drill movements and guard choreography were written specifically for this band and these members. It is catered to the abilities of each section, and the drill is charted to the exact number of members in this group. If a student isn’t there, it leaves a ‘blank’ or hole in the formation. Much care is taken each year to choose a musical program that offers a rewarding performance vehicle to our members, and also meets the competitive requirements to be successful at band festivals and competitions.
Students are divided into three primary sections: Winds, Percussion and Color Guard.
Each section is broken down further for organizational and communication reasons:
Winds
- Upper Winds: Piccolos, Clarinets, Alto Saxes, Trumpets, Mellophones
- Lower Winds: Tenor and Baritone Saxes, Trombones, Baritones and Tubas
Percussion
- Battery: Snare, Quads and Bass Drums (cymbals)
- Pit: Concert Percussion at front of field
Color Guard: Flags, Rifles, Props, Dance
All Marching Bands spend most of their time in sections. Even when we are in an ensemble situation, most instruction happens at the sectional level. Each section has a Senior ‘Section leader’ who will oversee the section’s progress. Sections must work together to make sure that their musical voice is clean and adds to the overall ensemble sound. They also physically work together to make sure that drill concepts come to life while moving about the field – there is a lot of precision movement which takes hours to master. It is essential that members of each section resolve differences in a sense of friendship and understanding. Most sections form a very tight bond which carries over to their daily lives.
Besides the Marching Band Director, the band is also taught by a professional staff of specialists. This includes teachers for marching, color guard, wind instruments, percussion battery and the pit section. Most students get to know their section teachers very well as most of our existence is in these smaller groups. When the band is evaluated at competitions, it is broken down by these sectional categories as well. Usually, friendly sectional rivalries become a fun diversion for the band as we go through the season. (Staff included!) This helps to raise the standards for all!

General Info
Student Responsibilities
Band Activity fee. Marching Band is considered an after school activity. Just like sports, there is an activity fee charged to all members who participate. Last year, this fee was $___. per student. This money is used as the operating budget for the band. We will collect the fee in two installments. The first $. is due during band camp, and the second $___. payment is due before the first performance (the first football game). Checks should be made out to: ________ HS ???? Account. Any family unable to pay should send the Director a letter explaining there is a hardship involving this fee. I will pass it onto the school personnel who oversee the _HS Activity account. This is extremely confidential so please don’t hesitate if there is a need.
Band Camp is an intensive two week program held at the end of August at _HS. All members are required to attend. Band Camp runs afternoons and evenings. These concentrated rehearsals allow the band to get a large portion of the fall program learned before the school year begins. Students learn marching techniques and portions of the drill, show music and equipment work, and begin to build a sense of teamwork and momentum going into the season. (See the ‘What Do I Need for Band Camp?’ below)
Music students will also be issued a Music Folio and Lyre during band camp. These are to be returned at the end of the season. If a student loses or abuses these items, they are responsible for replacing them. We use these at football games and while learning new music. Make sure that folios are clearly marked throughout the season.
The other item that is a regular part of a students’ daily band life is a ‘dot book’. Students are responsible for supplying a small well built notebook. They will write specific information on every drill set in the show, and are expected to have it with them at every rehearsal. Often students tie a rope or lanyard to this so they can wear it around their neck at drill rehearsals. This needs to survive the entire season – rain, mud, etc. It is worth the money to get something with a vinyl or plastic cover and has a solid binding (wire rings). This will be checked on the first day of band camp, and there will be regular checks of dot books throughout the season. These also need to be clearly labeled.
Students also need to bring a Water Bottle to every rehearsal, hats and sunscreen for outdoor rehearsals, and comfortable marching footwear (sneakers).
Communication – Since the band staff is not part of the daily faculty here at _HS, e-mail is our best source for communicating throughout the season. If you change your address or email, please inform (Director) so that you are kept ‘in the loop’ for all band communications.
Attendance
Weekly schedule – Marching Band is scheduled just like a Varsity sport. This is your fall activity and it is a competitive endeavor By choosing Marching Band/Color Guard, you are committing to be at every practice and performance. Work and other after school activities are not an excuse for absence. After _____ finals, our weekly schedule ends, with brief practices for football games. Basically, September / October are crazy. November is a minimal commitment through the Thanksgiving Game. See the attached day to day calendar.
Weekly Overview
Once school begins, we will follow this schedule. However, there are some variations to this. Again, see the attached day-to-day calendar.
- Monday – 2:30 to 5 Low Voices and Battery Percussion sectionals
- Tuesday – 6 to 9 Full Band and Color Guard – Sectionals
- Wednesday – 6 to 9 Full Band and Color Guard – Drill rehearsal
- Thursday – 2:30 to 5 Upper Voices and Pit sectionals
- Saturday 9 – 12:30 Full Band Ensemble rehearsal
On Fridays when there is a game, we have Full Band sectionals on Monday, 2:30 to 4 and Full Band (including Color Guard) rehearsal on Friday 2:30 to 3:30. (There would be no Thursday afternoon rehearsal). This would be the only time that Color Guard would meet after school.
On Saturdays with a competition, we would rehearse in the afternoon and go right to the evening competition after practice.
Performances – This year, the band will perform at # home football games, and # competitions. See the enclosed schedule. The (circuit) show finals are on Sunday. In the spring, the band performs at the _____ Visual and Performing Arts Day (VPAD) and the ______ Memorial Day Parade. By signing up for Marching Band and Color Guard, you are committing to these two spring dates and the required rehearsals that go with them, beyond our fall schedule.
Attendance at scheduled rehearsals and performances is a fundamental and integral part of your membership in the _______ band. Each performer in the ensemble is dependent on all band members being present to perform their specific part. Because the band is more than a collection of individual performers, it is necessary that we rehearse and perform as a unified group. Problems with individual attendance at performances seriously limits our ability to be consistent and strive for excellence. Every attempt has been made to structure a schedule that balances band membership with school, work and family obligations.
———————————-pg (uniform)
Uniform Information
Members of the Marching Band are issued show and game uniforms during Band Camp in August. Every piece is numbered and documented. Students are responsible for maintaining all uniform pieces throughout the fall season. This means that it is always hung on a hanger, and all pieces are accounted for.
The parts of the uniform that students are responsible for supplying are marching shoes, white socks, and white pants for football games. We use white, marching shoes designed specifically for marching band. Color Guard wears black shoes. Students who need new shoes should plan on going to (local store- tell them you’re from _HS or preferred website/shoe style). Students should purchase the ‘Athletic’ style at $29.95. Any questions about this, feel free to call the store at: phone number/website. In addition, Color Guard members are responsible for their gloves. These are also available at _______l.
Show Uniforms – These are BRAND NEW!
There will be no tolerance for mishandling or misplacing uniform parts.
Band Uniforms consist of:
- Jacket (This includes the washable collar insert, and the removable silver cross sash)
- Pants/Trousers (Washable)
- Gauntlets
- Shako (hat) and case (Stays at school)
- Plume and case (These will be collected after each performance)
- Heavy duty hangar
- Garment Bag
- White Marching Band shoes (student purchased)
- White gloves (1st pair provided by Boosters)
Color Guard Uniform: (The design and pieces may change from season to season)
- Jacket, Black Pants
- Black shoes
Game Uniform
- _HS Sweater
- White Pants (Students wear their own white pants)
- White Marching Band shoes
- Other weather-approved accessories as needed (gloves, hats)
Uniform Care
Each student is responsible for the care and safekeeping of their assigned Marching Band uniform. ANY DAMAGE OR LOSS OR LOSS OF A UNIFORM, OR ANY OF ITS PARTS, IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT. (Each uniform costs in excess of $## each)
Washing – The Jackets and Pants are washable. The Silver Sash is NOT! This should be removed whenever cleaning. In general, the only parts a student should wash at home are: Pants, gloves and Jacket collar lining (it snaps out). Only wash Jackets if instructed to. We are very worried about the Red matching for many years. We may pay for a dry cleaning as opposed to machine washing. Please ask if you feel your jacket needs cleaning. The Gauntlets are delicate and will lose their stiffness if washed. They may be hand washed only and hung to dry – no dryer. The Marching Band sweaters are machine washable. Wash in warm water, with detergent, set for regular wash cycle. Hang to dry, allowing at least 24 hours.
After each performance, uniform must be hung immediately. If it is damp, leave it out of the garment bag until dry, or leave the bag unzipped. Don’t put shoes in the Garment bag. They can damage or dirty the uniform if tossed around. Also, write your name on the inside of all shoes. Shoes are found throughout the season. A name will make sure their return.
Wearing the Uniforms – The way we wear our uniforms and take pride in our appearance reflects on our high standards as performers. When in uniform, you should never run, eat, curse or be loud or obnoxious. You are representing the Band, _______ High School and the entire community. Look your best and act like ladies and gentlemen.
- Unless instructed otherwise, when in uniform, remain in full uniform for the entire event. No one should be in ‘half-uniform’ at a performance. The only exception would be the shako.
- Only wear WHITE athletic or boxer shorts and white socks under uniform pants. Our pants are thin, and anything but plain white underneath will be seen.
- A t-shirt with sleeves must be worn under the jacket. The biggest threat to these coats is perspiration leaking through. A t-shirt will help to control this. No sleeveless tee’s! Obviously, in cold weather performances another layer or two could be added underneath for warmth. However, these jackets are close cut. Perhaps a single layer of thermal undergarment may work better.
- Hair must be worn above the collar and behind the ear. Very long hair must be tied back. Bobby pins or a hair elastic may be used to hold your hair up and inside of the hat. Make sure you pick a Shako to accommodate this.
- All jewelry must be removed when in uniform. No earrings, necklaces, etc. Plan ahead, leave valuable jewelry at home.
- Make up / cosmetics while in uniform is not recommended. Invisible base make up clogs the pores and does not allow the skin to sweat properly, leading to potential overheating. Also, it could run down your face when sweating. (Color Guard may wear make up if it’s part of the “look” of the Guard for performances.)
- No one should swap uniform parts without permission from the Uniform Moms. Detailed records are kept of each part assigned. If something doesn’t fit right, ask for help.
———————————-pg (code of conduct)
Code of Conduct
Whenever and wherever the ______ Marching Band appears in public, we are the representatives of the entire music program at __________ High School, the school itself, and all citizens and alumni who are in any way associated with this school or band. Whether in uniform or out, at a performance or a practice, on the road or at a home, in an official capacity or in a social setting, members of the ________ Band must conduct themselves in a mature, responsible, courteous, respectful and professional manner. Anything done by a member of the band reflects (positively or negatively) upon the entire Band organization, its leaders, the school and community. Just as we strive for excellence in our performances, we must also strive for excellence in our behavior and the manner in which we conduct ourselves.
- Respect your fellow band members, staff and parents assisting the band.
- -Use appropriate and courteous language.
- -Be honest, fair and personable (even if you don’t feel it)
- -Treat the school facilities with care.
- -Pick up trash, even if it isn’t yours.
- -Take good care of all equipment.
- -Respect the private property of others.
- Be on time. This generally means you should be on school property 15 minutes early, and in your spot, ready to go, 5 minutes early.
- Be positive! Look for creative solutions when you see problems, and contact the Director or a staff member for help.
- Cooperate fully with the Director and staff or anyone else who is in a leadership position. No talking when anyone is on the podium or addressing the band or your section. You are held accountable for any information presented in a rehearsal. When in a sectional, your section leader should be treated in the same manner you would treat a staff member.
- All ________ High School rules will be followed and enforced – at school or on the road. Smoking, use and/or possession of alcohol, tobacco weapons, or drugs is strictly forbidden and will not be tolerated. Violations of _HS rules will result in disciplinary action through school administration.
- You are responsible for the safekeeping of your music, instrument, uniform and any equipment you may use. Loss or damage of school owned equipment will become your financial responsibility (repair or replacement).
- If you make a mess, clean it up. If you produce trash, throw it away. Put things where they belong. If you’re not sure, ask.
- Couples – remember this is a band function, not a date!
- Make sure your name is on everything. (Case, music, folio, shoes, etc.)
- Always cheer for the other bands, particularly if they are our guests at a football game.
- Integrity: Making good decisions and doing what is right, even when nobody is watching you.
Band Room Rules
- Our school has an alarm system that isolates different parts of the school. When we have an evening or weekend rehearsals, all band members are to stay in the front of the building. No one should go down the hall towards the gyms, into any academic wing, or into the café. Going into these areas will trip an alarm and send the _______ PD to investigate. Students may use the bathrooms at the other end of the ‘office’ hallway, but no further without permission from the Director.
- There is no food or drink allowed in the Band Room, Chorus Room, or any other music classrooms used by the band. Water only!
- As stated earlier, all trash is your responsibility. Throw away empty bottles, and clean up what you bring.
- Band lockers will be assigned once we begin school. Members who participate in school-day bands will get their locker assignment from (Director) once school begins. Students who only participate in marching band will then be assigned a locker based on availability. These students should see (director) before or after school for a locker. This will start during the first full week of school.
- Do not leave money, purses, wallets, phones, headphones, instruments or other valuables unattended during rehearsals or during the school day. We cannot be responsible for valuables left in unsecured areas.
- When rehearsal begins, all members, including color guard will start in the band room for attendance. Make sure you check in with your section leader to confirm attendance. If the rehearsal begins outside, all students need to be in their warm up block spot.
- The Band Room should be returned to the daily set up after every rehearsal. If you moved a stand, chair, or piece of equipment, put it back where you found it. All instruments should be put away in lockers, percussion storage areas, or color guard spaces. There will be no tolerance for any kind of instrument mistreatment.
- Section Leaders need to make sure that whatever area their section uses is as clean or cleaner than how your section found it.
———————————-pg (games)
Football Game Procedures
Most football games start at 7:00 with the band reporting at 6:00. This year we have one game that starts at 6:00, so report time would be 5:00.
Here is a typical schedule for a 7:00 game:
- 6:00 Band reports to band room in game sweaters for attendance. Get equipment ready.
- 6:10 Sectionals – Warm Up/Tuning (May be indoors or in block in driveway)
- 6:30 Full band in block. Final instructions, review game music.
- 6:40 Band files up to stadium.
- 6:50 Enter stadium – reform Block.
- 6:55 ‘Fight Song’ & ‘Star Spangled Banner’ performed on field
- 7:00 Into stands – Game begins.
- 2 minutes before half-time – File out of stands and onto sideline
- Halftime If the away band is present, they perform first, then Dance Team, then us.
- After halftime – return to stands (break, booster snacks….?)
- 9:15ish Game ends. Band stays together and files (marches)back to the Band room.
- Pack up, reset Band room, go home.
No one may leave the stands without a parent. Let the Director know.
Bleacher Etiquette
- Good bands look organized and together at all times. We want to look as well as sound good. Behavior in the bleachers at football games and pep events is a vital element of the impression we give the public about our band program. One of our main functions at athletic events is enhancing the spirit and atmosphere for the fans. We are expected to show our enthusiastic school spirit and support the team. We are “________ Pride”!
- While playing music, always watch the Drum Major(s) and/or Band Director so that we start and stop together as a well organized ensemble.
- Be Alert! Watch the game and Drum Majors, things happen quickly. Be prepared to play the school fight song at a moments notice. Have your folio near by.
- There should be no playing on your own. This is very distracting and unprofessional.
- Watch your instrument carefully to avoid damage, and handle your equipment only. Never play other people’s instrument.
- We sit together by section, (clarinets together, trumpets together, etc.) Each section will have a row in the bleachers. This will enable us to sound our very best as well as look organized.
- Please do not invite non-band friends to sit with you in the bleachers, we are an organized performing group at a public event. Games are a performance for us, not a social gathering.
- For safety and liability reasons, do not leave the bleachers for any reason without permission from the Director or the chaperones assigned to the game.
- Remember you are a highly visible representative of _HS at all times, especially in uniform in the bleachers. Appropriate behavior is expected at all times. Have fun, but be in control.
Bus Rules and Procedures
All _HS band members are required to use school provided transportation to and from performances. Because of liability restrictions, only Band members, staff and designated parent chaperones will be allowed to ride on these buses. Parents will need to contact the Director for any special transportation arrangements needed for their student. Return times from events are generally listed in the schedule for the event. However, at contests the exact departure time may change depending on weather, host activities, etc. Students may want to have a phone with them to update parents on arrival time at _HS should they change. Parents need to make every effort to be in the parking lot for pick up at the stated time.
Other things to consider:
- DO NOT change buses. You must ride the same bus for the entire event. Leave the front two seats open for chaperones.
- While riding on buses, stay seated and try to keep the noise under control. No loud screaming, radios, etc.
- Do Not play your instrument on the bus.
- Do not throw anything out of the windows. Keep arms, head, etc. inside windows.
- Answer roll call for yourself only and listen up. Roll call will happen each time we load the buses.
- Take care of your trash and check around your seat before you leave the bus.
- Upon returning to school, close your window if it’s down.
- Be courteous, do what chaperones ask and thank the drivers and chaperones when we return.
- Do not use the emergency doors unless it’s the only way to get equipment off the bus (or if it’s actually an emergency!).
- Valuables should be left at home. Don’t leave phones, jewelry or money on the bus. If you listen to music on the bus, use headphones. There are many reasons for this.
- Get your equipment off the bus or truck and back into the school when we return to school. If you can help unload pit equipment as well, please help out. The parents are here to assist you, not do it for you!
