Assessing Musicality Article
by Jeff Bolduc – read, don’t take.
This Assessing Musicality article was written as an academic paper in Grad School. Here’s what to expect:
- Explores the history of how musicality has been assessed.
- Looks at current trends in rubrics, criteria, and terms used in festivals.
- Gives advice to circuits hiring music judges, and to people thinking about getting into judging music festivals, auditions, or competitions.
- Lots of links and resources at the end.
This has been a passion of mine for years as I’ve judged music festivals and competitions. An ensemble can be incredibly ‘clean’ but not musical at all, while I’ve seen groups that had flaws but were incredibly musical and creative. The challenge – which one is ‘better’? How do you decide? Hopefully this Assessing Musicality Article will help to navigate some of those considerations.
